This was a project with a lovely mix of heraldry and illustration.

The client wanted to use illuminated lettering to spice up six interpretation panels to be placed in a castle dungeon. Each room has a few paragraphs of text and the idea was that each letter could depict the subject matter.

These were worked up from sketches and then hand-painted on a digital tablet. The little vignette illustrations are in a mediaeval style of drawing to fit the theme. I used an image of gold leaf behind each of the letters with shadows to give it a more physical look.

I must say I hugely enjoyed working on these and it’s something I hope I get to do again.
