This was a commission to design a layout a booklet of walks around villages of the Dee Valley as part of the “Corwen welcomes the steam train” project.
The colourful illustrations were provided by the client, and the style needed to work with them to reference the wonderful thirties railway posters, but also keep the look fresh and not dated. I created the nine maps to fit the style of the booklet.
I used the humanist font Gotham and a muted colour palette that included a dark purple grey to chime with the slate of the area. The palette is strong on its own but doesn’t overwhelm the images – making them stand out.
This was a “Tête-beche” layout – English one way up to halfway through the booklet and Welsh version the other way up – two covers and no back.
